Jean-Michel Knickerbocker
Master Electrician - Owner
Jean-Michel is as particular with his work as he is about his name. It is French and that throws people off. A phonetic spelling in is “Zhuhn-Meeshel”. He loves being called by his full name as we are sure many of you do to.
Jean-Michel got started as an electrician helping his family re-wire a house they were going to live in when he was 11 or 12 years old. He loved to connect all the wires and make the lights turn on from here and there and everywhere. He was a teenage boy a couple years later and noticed that all the electricians he knew had pretty wives and made more money than his Dad. The decision was made just like that. He figured out what he had to do to have that life and started taking action.
That was a vocational program for electricians offered through the local high school he was able to attend. Though it he entered a competition for Electricians in the Skills USA Program. He got 1st place at Regional and State competitions. He was sponsored by a local contractor, Hale Construction, to go to the National competition representing Utah. He didn’t do as well there as at state but it was fun to get job offers for out of state jobs before he even graduated high school.
After high school he attended Vo tech school at SLCC in Salt Lake City. Two years of night school then two years of mission for Christ then two more years of night school and work, finally in 2010 he was able to get his journeyman license. If you remember, that was a down time in the construction market. He took a job for $10 an hour to get the last 275 hours he needed to test for the journeyman license. It was almost a double in pay when he finally got that license. That was a GREAT day.
Four years later he studied up a little and passed his masters exam with a higher score than his journeyman exam. 84% on the journeyman and 86% on the Masters. Not perfect but not bad either. He is happy that he only had to take them each once. If you were to ask Jean-Michel “What do you like them most about being an electrician?” He would answer “I love to turn the lights on! That is my favorite part. It makes me exited just thinking about it right now.”

Our Story
Orange Electric LLC is named after the founder, Jean-Michel's favorite color: ORANGE!
But, in the world of electricity, orange is also the color used to mark a "high leg" of power from a delta transformer, which is 50% more powerful than the other two legs. At Orange Electric, we believe we have a little more juice than other companies out there.
Jean-Michel started Orange Electric with the goal of serving customers and creating a better life for his family. It was a big decision to strike out on his own, but with the support of his courageous wife, Anna, in the office, they took the leap. It took a couple of years to build up clientele, starting with one or two weekend projects, until there was a decision to be made - more time with family or nights and weekends to keep clients taken care of. Mentors like Tim Reese, Brett and Nicole Spence, Nephi Gibson, and LeRoy Edwards played a crucial role in helping Orange Electric along the way. They taught Jean-Michel important skills and even gave him work to keep the business going.
Now, six years later, Orange Electric has grown and thrived. We are grateful for the opportunity to serve our community and help make our customers' electrical dreams come true.
